On Sunday, April 27th, WZCC and ZAGNY co-sponsored
a screening of Tenaz Dubash's
recent documentary, "Crisis
in Faith: Zoroastrians Today".
Over 75 people attended the screening in
Manhattan. It was followed by an interactive
questions and answers session. The audience
was engaged and eager to participate in
this discussion.
The hour-long documentary focused on the
assimilation of the Zoroastrian community
into North America. The film highlighted
the challenges faced by members of the religion
today. By documenting the personal stories
of individual Zoroastrians, it shed light
on the little known but highly successful
Zoroastrian community, enabling others to
appreciate the religion's rich history and
heritage.
This event was a part of the WZCC
"Conversations With" series.
It was an enjoyable afternoon and an informative
film. We thank Tenaz for sharing this experience
with us and wish her much success in her
future projects. To learn more about this
film, you can visit www.tenazdubash.com.
For future "Conversations With"
events, please contact one of the WZCC Board
members.

The 2Q 2008 World Zarathushti Chamber of
Commerce, NY Chapter meeting was held on
May 18th. Professor Kaikhosrov Irani,
the Emeritus Professor of Philosophy,
shared his thoughts on "Ethical
Considerations in Business According to
Zoroastrianism".
The mission of WZCC is to promote entrepreneurial
spirit in the Zoroastrian community. Our
activities address how to compete effectively
in an increasingly competitive world. Competition
is central to business and commerce. Competition
also leads to the question of right and
wrong. We have seen some spectacular violations
of ethics during the last few years. However,
the questions of ethics, of what is right
and what is wrong, do not arise only on
a grand scale. They arise in ordinary moments
in our workplace.
Professor Irani said that the essence of
the subject is not to specify a set of prescriptions
but to develop consciousness that can guide
us at critical moments. He gave a brief
philosophical and religious overview of
values governing ethical decisions. Specifically,
the Zoroastrian scriptures tell us to avoid
deliberate deception at all times. He stated
that three values have generally been considered
important in arriving at ethical decisions.
These are: self-realization, freedom
and justice. Thoughts, words and
actions that diminish these values for others
may be considered unethical. He commented
that sometimes the first of these values
is replaced by love and forgiveness, as
in the teachings of Jesus the Christ. He
also gave examples of how the application
of ethical principles may be affected by
the relationships of the interacting parties.
This is a serious and somewhat abstract
subject, but Professor Irani made it understandable
and enjoyable with illustrations and humor.
The presentation was followed by an animated
period of audience participation. The session
ended with Virasp Davar summarizing the
key points from Professor Irani's address,
and suggesting how they might be applied
in business situations.
Arnaz Maneckshana thanked Prof. Irani for
his superb talk, recognized Coordinators
Lovji Cama, Keki Dadachanji, Edul Daver
and Meher Hodiwala, and Caterer Sheroo Kanga.
The WZCC Committee thanks all the Members
and Guests who participated in this event.
